Automated Support for Human Decision and Control in Military Systems with Varying Levels of Autonomy
نویسنده
چکیده
From the perspective of the human commander of a complex automated process, an important factor that influences the quality of the command dialog is the ability of the user interface to provide information that allows the commander to perform situation assessment. Another important factor is the ability of the user interface to provide accessible and usable mechanisms to support communication between the human and the contol system. We believe that much of the substrate for such human-machine dialog may be provided by a dynamic, model-based representation of the system components and processes, shared by all software and human agents participating in the control situation. In addition, we believe that the current method of providing user interactions to dynamic control systems, which involves static predesign of all user interface components and interactions, is inadequate to meet the needs of multi-agent systems requiring varying levels of participant autonomy and varying levels of mixed-initiative control by human commanders, especially those in dynamically changing situations such as those present in a military battlefield. We have developed an approach that overcomes these limitations, using model-based productive reasoning about situations and interaction design, and are successfully applying this approach in the domain of military command and control of teams of semi-autonomous vehicles.

Capability, Cognition and Autonomy
The aim is to consider the role of humans in intelligent and automated systems, with enhanced capability from ubiquitous information, computer and communication technologies. The key human factors (HF) issues are generally believed to be what are appropriate levels of automation for military decision functions, and how to mitigate the associated risks for human understanding, prediction and con...

The application of nuclear reactors for space power and/or propulsion presents some unique challenges regarding the operations and control of the power system. Terrestrial nuclear reactors employ varying degrees of human control and decision-making for operations and benefit from periodic human interaction for maintenance. In contrast, the control system of a space nuclear power plant (SNPP) em...

This study analyses the concept of cost functions for semi-automated Straddle Carrier (SC), Rubber Tyred Gantry (RTG) and automated Rail Mounted Gantry (RMG) container yard operating cranes. It develops a generic cost based model for a pair-wise comparison, analysis and evaluation of economic efficiency and effectiveness of container yard equipment to be used for decision-making by terminal pla...
متن کاملDecentralisation and Management of Human Resource for Health in the Health System of Ghana: A Decision Space Analysis
Background The implications of decentralisation on human resource for health management has not received adequate research attention despite the presupposition that the concept of decentralisation leads to the transfer of management authority and discretion for human resource management from national levels to subnational levels. This study aims at investigating the extent to which decent...
متن کاملDeveloping a New Decision Support System to Manage Human Reliability based on HEART Method
Human performance and reliability monitoring have become the main issue for many industries since human error ratios cannot be mitigated to the zero level and many accidents, malfunctions, and quality defects are happening due to the human in production systems. Since the human resources implement a different range of tasks, the calculation of human error probability (HEP) is complicated, and s...
